Dartmouth College and the 1956 Workshop That Named AI

Dartmouth College hosted the eight-week 1956 workshop whose proposal introduced “artificial intelligence,” though its researchers rotated in and out across the summer.

A proposal with a name in it

John McCarthy, then a Dartmouth mathematics professor, organized what became the 1956 Dartmouth Summer Research Project, proposing that "every aspect of learning or any other feature of intelligence can in principle be so precisely described that a machine can be made to simulate it." The proposal, dated August 31, 1955 and co-written with Marvin Minsky, Nathaniel Rochester of IBM and Claude Shannon of Bell Labs, is where the phrase "artificial intelligence" first appears in print with that meaning. [2][1]

Who was actually there

The workshop ran eight weeks, from June 18 to August 17, 1956, and attendance was loose: researchers came and went as their own schedules allowed rather than committing to the whole summer. A later account by Ray Solomonoff's daughter, drawing on his notes and a workshop photograph, names Marvin Minsky, Ray Solomonoff and John McCarthy as the only three participants who stayed for the entire eight weeks; Oliver Selfridge, Nathaniel Rochester, Claude Shannon and Peter Milner also appear in that photograph. [3]

Atlas interpretation: That loose attendance matters for how the workshop should be read. It was not a sustained research team producing results together over a summer so much as a rotating cast dropping in on an idea, which is part of why the proposal's confident one-summer timeline for major progress did not hold up the way the name it coined did. [3]

Seventy years later, a different kind of commitment

Dartmouth's own account of the 1956 project credits McCarthy with organizing the meeting and quotes philosophy professor James Moor on the researchers' aim of building a framework for understanding intelligence itself. The same page notes that Dartmouth became the first Ivy League school to adopt AI at an institutional scale in 2025, through partnerships with Anthropic and AWS, with a faculty leadership group overseeing use across areas including healthcare, deepfake detection and climate modeling.
