Review before and after the pull request
CodeRabbit builds AI tools for reviewing code changes. Its product works in the part of development where a patch is checked and discussed, rather than only where code is generated. Current product descriptions extend that role to governance and control of changes produced with coding agents. [1]
On May 14, 2025, CodeRabbit released an extension for VS Code and compatible editors. It reviewed local changes before the developer opened a pull request, bringing feedback earlier into the coding workflow. The launch described this as a lighter review than the full pull-request service, with its own usage limits. [2]
The milestone added a review stage where developers could still revise unsubmitted work. It was more than a connector to another editor, but it did not make CodeRabbit the developer of Cursor or Windsurf merely because those VS Code-based editors could run the extension. Nor did the announcement establish that automated review replaced a human's responsibility for accepting a change. [2]
