ByteDance AI Models: Doubao, Seedance, Copyright Dispute

ByteDance builds the Doubao, Seedream, and Seedance models; Seedance 2.0 drew cease-and-desist demands from Hollywood over generated characters.

ByteDance's AI research goes back further than its recent chatbots and video generators. ByteDance AI Lab, headed by Wei-Ying Ma, formerly of Microsoft Research Asia, was established in March 2016 to do foundational research feeding the company's products. Doubao, ByteDance's general-purpose chat assistant, launched in August 2023 and is the closest thing the company has to a ChatGPT competitor inside China. In December 2025, ByteDance said Doubao would power an AI voice assistant built into Chinese smartphones, debuting on ZTE's Nubia M153 handset. [2]

Doubao and ByteDance's newer generative models are developed under Seed, an AI team the company established in 2023 to build out its generative AI work across Chinese and international markets. Seedream, a text-to-image model with generation and editing features, and Seedance, a text-to-video and image-to-video model, both carry the Seed name. Seedance 1.0 launched in June 2025; ByteDance shipped an updated Seedance 2.0 in February 2026. [2]

Hollywood's first cease-and-desist to an AI company

Seedance 2.0's realism was also what got it in trouble. Clips depicting an AI-generated Brad Pitt, Tom Cruise, Shrek, SpongeBob, Darth Vader, Deadpool and a Spider-Man fight sequence spread on social media within days of release. Disney sent its own cease-and-desist on February 13, 2026, and on February 20, 2026 the Motion Picture Association sent a formal letter to ByteDance's Culver City office, written by MPA general counsel Karyn Temple. The letter cited specific infringing outputs and stated: "The scale and consistency of these results demonstrate systemic infringement rather than inadvertence. In other words, Seedance's copyright infringement is a feature, not a bug." It gave ByteDance until February 27 to confirm concrete remediation steps. Paramount Skydance separately accused ByteDance of infringing Star Trek, South Park and Dora the Explorer material, and two US senators called it the most glaring copyright infringement case from a ByteDance product to date. [3]

ByteDance responded on February 16, 2026 with a two-sentence statement saying it respects copyright and would strengthen existing safeguards. Temple characterized that response as insufficient. The sources available as of this check does not show a further public resolution, an MPA lawsuit, or a documented rollback of Seedance's output filters. [3][4]

Why this belongs in an AI timeline

Atlas interpretation: ByteDance's relevance to the timeline runs on two tracks: it is one of a small number of companies outside the US frontier-lab cluster shipping generative models at real scale, in text, image and video, and Seedance 2.0 is the clearest example yet of a video model realistic enough to force an industry response rather than a policy debate. The MPA's choice of words, calling the infringement a feature rather than a bug, is the studios' characterization, not an independent finding, and this page does not take a side on whether ByteDance's later safeguards were adequate.
