ASML in AI: EUV Lithography, Chip Supply & Mistral Stake

ASML makes the EUV lithography systems used for advanced AI chips. Its record also covers export controls and its 2025 investment in Mistral AI.

The machine every advanced chip needs

ASML makes the photolithography machines that print circuit patterns onto silicon wafers. Its extreme ultraviolet, or EUV, systems use light with a wavelength short enough to etch features a few nanometers wide, the resolution advanced logic chips need. ASML describes the technology as unique to the company, and independent estimates put its share of worldwide lithography equipment sales at roughly 83 percent as of 2025. Christophe Fouquet is chief executive; the company is headquartered in Veldhoven, in the Netherlands. [2][3]

A single EUV system costs on the order of $200 million, and only ASML makes them. TSMC, Samsung and Intel are its primary customers, the same three companies that fabricate essentially every leading-edge AI accelerator on the market. ASML reported 2025 revenue of roughly €32.7 billion and net income of about €9.6 billion, and by early 2026 it was Europe's most valuable technology company by market capitalization. [3]

Atlas interpretation: That position makes ASML a chokepoint for AI compute rather than a company that trains or sells models. Every GPU or custom AI accelerator built on a leading-edge process node was patterned on an ASML machine somewhere upstream, which is also why ASML sits at the center of export-control fights over China's access to advanced chipmaking. [3]

The Netherlands and the United States have progressively tightened restrictions on ASML's sales of its most advanced EUV and immersion DUV systems to Chinese customers between 2023 and 2025, citing national security. ASML has said the controls reduce the addressable market for its top-end tools in China without eliminating its China business, which still buys older-generation equipment. [3]

Buying into the model layer

On September 9, 2025, ASML led Mistral AI's €1.7 billion Series C, putting in €1.3 billion for a stake of roughly 11 percent on a fully diluted basis at an €11.7 billion valuation. ASML's chief financial officer, Roger Dassen, took a seat on Mistral's strategic committee. It was ASML's first investment of that size in an AI model developer rather than in a supplier or customer further down its own supply chain. [4]

Both companies framed the deal around applying AI models inside ASML's own business: chip design, manufacturing process control, and research and development, with the stated goal of faster and higher-performing lithography systems. Fouquet said the collaboration aimed to generate benefits for ASML customers through AI-enabled products; Mistral's Arthur Mensch said it would accelerate progress across the semiconductor and AI value chain. [4]

Atlas interpretation: The deal reads differently depending on which end of the chain you start from. From Mistral's side, it is a large round anchored by a strategic investor with deep pockets and no interest in competing on models. From ASML's side, it is the equipment monopoly at the base of the AI hardware stack buying a stake in a lab at the top of the software stack, on the theory that better AI tools make its own machines and its customers' fabs more productive. Whether that pays off is a question about ASML's internal engineering, not about Mistral's model quality. [4]
