Research intended for practical use

Answer.AI is an AI research and development lab focused on turning research into useful software. Its December 2023 launch account named Jeremy Howard as founding CEO and Eric Ries as founding director. It described a remote research organization and a company intended to become profitable. This establishes a commercial research model, without implying nonprofit status. [1][2]

One concrete contribution is ModernBERT, released with LightOn on December 19, 2024. The joint announcement supplied base and large encoder models with 149 million and 395 million parameters, extending the BERT-style architecture to longer inputs. Answer.AI's role was co-development, beyond hosting or reporting the release. [3]

Models beneath an application

The ModernBERT-base checkpoint uses Apache 2.0 and an 8,192-token sequence length. Developers can adapt it for retrieval and classification. An encoder helps interpret or rank input; it serves a different role from the generative model producing an assistant's final answer. This provides a concrete example of Answer.AI's applied research contributing reusable components. [4]
